Photo AlbumVeterans' Day Ceremony, 11/11/04 Veterans' Memorial Forest, Ava, NY Veterans' Day Ceremony, 11/11/04 While 60 veterans and area residents gathered at the Veterans' Memorial Forest, the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority refused to stop its construction during the 15-minute service honoring all US veterans who lost their lives serving this country. Construction equipment could be seen and heard during the ceremony, an event that has been held annually since 1953. Encampment Local veterans hold an encampment in the Veterans' Memorial Forest to oppose the dump in 2000. The Memorial Forest was OHSWA's first choice for a dump site in 1993. The sign in the background reads, "This is hallowed ground."
